August 2024 School Counselor Newsletter

Mrs. Bailey's Moroni Elementary School Counselor Newsletter

Welcome back to school!

We are so excited to have our students back at school and are looking forward to all the amazing things they are going to do this year. Starting next week, I will begin the year teaching four Bully Prevention lessons which teach our students how to recognize bullying (repeated, on purpose, and with an imbalance of power), how to report bullying and how to refuse bullying. We want our students to be kind to each other, look out for each other, and feel like Moroni Elementary School is a safe place to be. For the rest of the school year, starting in the end of September our school counselor lessons will be taught from the Why Try? program which teaches the valuable skill of being resilient. We know that being resilient is such an essential skill and if students can learn to be resilient, they will have a stronger chance of being successful in life... and that’s what we all want right? We want our kids to succeed.

Additionally- our College and Career Week will be the 16-20 September. We will be having our annual Career Exploration Day on Friday 20th September 2024. If you would be willing to come in and share with our students what you do for your job and what it takes to be good at what you do, please let me know!

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have!

As we return from Spring Break, it's a reminder that we’re in the final stretch of the school year. In April and May, we will complete the last two lessons of the "Why Try" Program. Lesson 9, Plugging In, focuses on connecting with others when we feel stuck or need help—whether it’s parents, caregivers, friends, teachers, or mentors. Students will learn that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Our featured books are Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present and Stone Soup. Lesson 10, The Wall, encourages students to see the big picture and ties together the concepts from the entire program, helping them build opportunity, freedom, and self-respect. The books we’ll read are The Treasure, The Red Lemon, and Seven Blind Mice. Family Night is Tuesday, April 22nd, at 6:00 PM. We hope to see you there!

This month we finished up Why Try #7 “Desire Time and Effort” and have started our Why Try #8 “Lift The Weight”. This lesson focuses on doing hard things and how when we push through our challenges, it makes us stronger both physically and mentally. As we continue to work through our challenges, we solidify our self belief that we can do hard things. We will read “ Brave Irene ” and “ Cinderella ” and identify the weights and challenges they had to carry and because they never gave up, they were successful and lived happily ever after. At the end of the month, we will start Why Try #9 “ Plugging In ” which focuses on getting help from positive supports when we go through our challenges. We will read the books “ Stone Soup ” and “ Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present. ” Students will identify who their support system is.
