February 2025 School Counselor Newsletter

This month, we are excited to begin our 6th Why Try? lesson, titled "Jumping Hurdles." In this lesson, students will learn a valuable process for solving problems they may face in their daily lives. While new challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming or scary, we will emphasize that everyone has the ability to overcome difficult situations.

Our focus will be on recognizing the hurdles we encounter and creating strategies to overcome them. We’ll explore the importance of making mistakes, trying again, and persevering—reminding ourselves that we are capable of doing hard things.

To support this lesson, we will read the following stories: Dr. De Soto, One Grain of Rice, and Owen. These stories will help students understand how determination and problem-solving can lead to success.

We are looking forward to guiding our students in developing resilience and confidence as they learn to face and overcome life's challenges!

As we return from Spring Break, it's a reminder that we’re in the final stretch of the school year. In April and May, we will complete the last two lessons of the "Why Try" Program. Lesson 9, Plugging In, focuses on connecting with others when we feel stuck or need help—whether it’s parents, caregivers, friends, teachers, or mentors. Students will learn that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Our featured books are Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present and Stone Soup. Lesson 10, The Wall, encourages students to see the big picture and ties together the concepts from the entire program, helping them build opportunity, freedom, and self-respect. The books we’ll read are The Treasure, The Red Lemon, and Seven Blind Mice. Family Night is Tuesday, April 22nd, at 6:00 PM. We hope to see you there!
